DOCUMENT WORKFLOW

Convert files without compromising quality

Move between PDF, Word, Excel, JPG and PNG with crisp output and a workflow that stays entirely in your browser.

Converter guide

Converting between PDF, Word, Excel, JPG and PNG usually comes down to picking the right tool for what needs to change and what has to stay the same. PDF to Word and PDF to Text pull out the words so you can edit or search them, but neither can rebuild a complex multi-column layout pixel-for-pixel — keep the source file and only convert a copy when precise formatting matters. Word to PDF goes the other direction and is the safer choice when a document needs to look identical on every device, because PDF freezes the layout instead of leaving it to whatever fonts happen to be installed on the reader's computer. PDF to JPG and PDF to PNG render each page as an image — JPG is smaller and fine for photos or scans, PNG is lossless and better for pages with sharp text or line art. Image to PDF and the Document Scanner do the reverse: turning one or more photos into a single, properly ordered PDF, with the scanner adding page-enhancement filters and an optional searchable text layer so the result behaves like a real scanned document instead of just a picture.

Every converter on this page runs the actual conversion inside your browser tab using open-source libraries (pdf-lib and pdf.js) that download once and then execute locally — your PDF, Word file or photo is never uploaded to a Toolnova server. That's also why very large files (several hundred pages, or dozens of high-resolution photos) can take longer or use more memory than a server-side converter would: the work is genuinely happening on your own device.

Will PDF to Word keep my original formatting?

Text and paragraph breaks carry over, but complex layouts — multi-column pages, embedded fonts, tables that span pages — are approximated, not pixel-perfect. For documents you'll keep editing long-term, treat the .doc output as a strong starting draft rather than a final replacement for the source file.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

Not directly — decrypt it first. Because the file never leaves your browser, Toolnova has no way to prompt for or store a password on a server; you'll need a PDF that's already unlocked before running it through any converter here.

Why does PDF to JPG produce one image per page instead of one image total?

PDF pages aren't a single continuous image — each page is rendered separately so you can pick and download exactly the pages you need, or grab all of them at once as a ZIP.

Is there a file size or page limit?

There's no artificial cap, but since conversion happens on your device, the practical limit is your browser's available memory. Mobile browsers in particular can struggle with 100+ page PDFs or very high-resolution scans — splitting a large file first with Split PDF often helps.

OCR guide

Optical character recognition (OCR) turns pixels — a photo of a receipt, a scanned contract, a screenshot of a paragraph — into text you can copy, search and edit. Toolnova's OCR runs entirely in your browser using Tesseract, the same open-source recognition engine behind many commercial tools, downloaded on demand the first time you open an OCR tool. Image to Text handles single photos and screenshots directly. Scan PDF to Text does the same job for a scanned PDF, page by page, and is the tool to reach for when a PDF was produced by a physical scanner or a "photo saved as PDF" workflow rather than exported from a word processor — those PDFs contain an image of the text, not the text itself, so PDF to Text alone will return nothing useful on them.

OCR accuracy depends heavily on the source image: straight, well-lit, high-contrast photos of clean typed text recognize best. Handwriting, low light, skewed angles and low resolution all reduce accuracy, and no OCR engine — Toolnova's included — gets everything right on a difficult scan. Always proofread OCR output before relying on it for anything official.

Does OCR work on handwriting?

Only unreliably. Tesseract, like most OCR engines, is trained primarily on printed text; cursive or messy handwriting often produces garbled results. For handwritten notes, manual transcription is still more accurate.

Which languages does OCR support?

The default is English. Recognition quality for other languages depends on which language data the underlying engine loads — accented characters and non-Latin scripts are more error-prone than plain English text.

Why is OCR slower than the other tools?

Recognition happens page-by-page on your own device's CPU rather than a server, so a 20-page scanned PDF genuinely takes longer than a 1-page photo. Large or high-resolution files take proportionally longer.

The Edit PDF tools cover the everyday page-level changes people actually need: combining files with Merge PDF, pulling specific pages out with Split PDF, Extract PDF Pages or the multi-file Split Multiple PDFs, removing pages you don't want with Delete PDF Pages, fixing sideways scans with Rotate PDF, shrinking file size with Compress PDF, and adding a signature or typed note directly onto a page with Sign PDF and Add Text to PDF. All of them work on the PDF's existing structure rather than re-rendering the document from scratch, which is why they stay fast even on large files and why the output keeps the original text as real, selectable text instead of turning it into a flat image.

A common question is what "compress" actually does here: Toolnova's compressor re-optimizes the PDF's internal structure (removing redundant objects, using more efficient object streams) rather than aggressively re-encoding embedded images at lower quality the way some server-based compressors do. The size reduction is usually modest, but visual quality never degrades — if a PDF is mostly large embedded images, the more effective move is often to convert it to JPG first, compress the images at a lower quality, then rebuild it with Image to PDF.

What's the difference between Split PDF and Extract PDF Pages?

Split PDF takes a typed page range (like "1-3,5"), which is quick when you already know the exact pages. Extract PDF Pages shows a thumbnail of every page so you can click to select visually — better when you need to check what's actually on each page first. Split Multiple PDFs does the same visual selection across several files at once.

Can I sign a PDF and have it count as a legally binding signature?

Sign PDF adds a typed, drawn or uploaded signature image to the page — useful for everyday forms and internal documents, but it doesn't add cryptographic signing or identity verification. Contracts that require a legally certified e-signature need a dedicated e-signature service instead.

Will editing a PDF here remove its password protection?

No — encrypted or password-protected PDFs need to be unlocked first, outside Toolnova, since files aren't uploaded anywhere for processing. Once you have an unprotected copy, any of the Edit PDF tools will work on it.

Generator guide

QR Code Generator and Password Generator are the two tools people reach for most in this category, and both matter more than they look: a QR code is only as reliable as the data encoded in it, so double-check the URL or text before generating one for print — a mistake is expensive to fix once it's on a flyer or a product label. A generated password's strength comes almost entirely from length and randomness rather than complexity rules; a random 16-character password is dramatically harder to guess than a shorter one stuffed with symbols, which is why the length slider matters more than which character sets you tick.

Color Code Converter converts between HEX, RGB and HSL for designers and developers who need the same color expressed in a different format, and Lorem Ipsum Generator produces placeholder paragraphs for mockups and layout testing before real copy is ready.

Are generated passwords stored anywhere?

No. Passwords are generated using your browser's random number generator and shown to you once — nothing is transmitted or logged. Copy it somewhere secure, ideally a password manager, right away, since closing the tool loses it.

Do QR codes expire?

A QR code generated here simply encodes a fixed piece of text or a URL — it doesn't expire and isn't tied to a Toolnova account. If it points to a URL, the code stays scannable for as long as that URL stays live.

Calculator guide

The health calculators — BMI, BMR, Calorie, Body Fat and Water Intake — all use standard, published formulas (Mifflin-St Jeor for BMR and calorie needs, the U.S. Navy tape-measurement method for body fat) rather than anything proprietary, so the math behind each result is the same starting point a dietitian or trainer would use. They're estimates, though: BMI in particular doesn't distinguish muscle from fat and can be misleading for very athletic or very tall or short people, and none of these numbers account for medical conditions, medications or individual metabolic variation. Treat every result here as a reference point for a conversation with a professional, not a diagnosis.

The financial calculators — Tip, Discount and Loan — use straightforward arithmetic (simple amortization for the loan calculator) and are accurate for the numbers you enter, but a real loan quote will also include fees, taxes, insurance requirements and a lender's specific compounding method. Use the loan calculator to compare scenarios quickly, then confirm the real figure with your lender before signing anything.

Which formula does the BMR calculator use?

The Mifflin-St Jeor equation, generally considered more accurate than the older Harris-Benedict formula for most adults. It estimates the calories your body burns at complete rest, before any activity is added.

Why does the loan calculator's total interest look different from my bank's quote?

Bank quotes typically include origination fees, PMI or insurance, taxes and their own compounding schedule, none of which a simple calculator can know about. Use the tool to compare "what if" scenarios — a shorter term, a lower rate — then get the exact figure from the lender.

Is the Body Fat calculator as accurate as a DEXA scan or caliper test?

No — the U.S. Navy tape method used here is a reasonable estimate from a few circumference measurements, but it's less precise than clinical methods like DEXA scans, hydrostatic weighing or skinfold calipers. It's a useful, free way to track trends over time, not a clinical measurement.

Converter guide

Unit Converter covers length, weight, temperature and speed using exact, fixed conversion factors, so its numbers are as precise as your input — there's no approximation beyond normal floating-point rounding. Currency Converter is different: exchange rates move constantly, so the rates built into this tool are static reference points rather than a live feed, useful for a rough estimate but not for anything time-sensitive like an actual transfer or purchase — check your bank or a live-rate source for that. Case Converter and Word Counter are the simpler text utilities in this group: instant case switching (upper, lower, title, sentence case) for writers and developers cleaning up text, and a live word, character and sentence count useful for anything with a length limit, from a social post to an essay assignment.

How current are the currency conversion rates?

They're static reference rates, not a live market feed, so treat the result as an approximation. For an actual transfer, purchase or accounting record, always confirm the live rate with your bank or card provider.

Does Word Counter count differently than Microsoft Word or Google Docs?

Minor differences are normal — tools vary slightly in how they treat hyphenated words, numbers and punctuation when counting. For strict submission limits, use whichever tool your recipient will actually use to check the count.
